Sleep and Snoring Detection - Microphone and Hardware
Mic/Vibration No Device based Tracking Sleep Quality
Runtastic Sleep Better - monitors your sleep cycle, duration (both light and deep sleep) and efficiency with the simple tap of a button and placing your device by your pillow.
- Works in airplane mode: Simply set your device on your bed (next to your pillow). Your sleep app will do the work!
Sleep track with your tablet: This sleep app and alarm clock works on tablets, too! Same as your smartphone, place it right next to your pillow.
Accuracy pretty good and great without Wearables
As with any sleep tracker, not sure about the accuracy.
I wouldn't really rely on it though. The graph always shows I was awake for the hours after sunrise, even though I just woke up.
Use of Mic to detect
But I can definitely tell it reads when I get up to the bathroom and things like that. Side note, since this app uses the mic, if you tend to fall sleep with music or maybe soundtracks playing, especially through your phone, the app will track you as fully awake until the music stops playing.
Issue: Fire Safety on cloth bed
However, on the first night, this sucker made my phone overheat. Placed it somewhat differently on the second night and it still overheated. No thank you. I don't need my phone melting and causing a fire near my head. Deleted app.
I downloaded the app and saw that it requires you to have your phone next to you and the bed whilst plugged into a power source. How incredibly dangerous. Having a phone on charge should only ever be done on a flat, solid surface because of fire risk! I'm not willing to risk the lives of my partner and I for a sleep tracking app. Anyone who does use this, please be careful and read about the dangerous and stories of people who charge their phone on the bed/under a pillow all night.
Audio Based Sleep Trackers - Technical and Market Review
S+ by ResMed
The S+ Sensor from ResMed uses radio waves to track your sleep. The S+ Sensor listens for the echoes of your pulse to sense your sleep.
Deep sleep metrics that keep your body free of tech
Bedside monitor, requires no contact
Deeper feedback and tips to improve sleep
Easily confused if you share a bed with someone
Must be perfectly placed
However unobtrusive they feel during the day, wearing a fitness band at night is often uncomfortable. Some dig into your skin or get twisted and clammy, which actually ends up impeding sleep.
ResMed takes a different approach with a non-contact sleep monitor. Despite sitting on the bedside table, it claims it can accurately monitor breathing, heart rate, movement and overall sleep quality.
This is all while keeping tabs on noise, light and temperature levels to deliver feedback on how you can improve your environment.
The powerful companion app guides you through breathing exercises to help you nod off and plays sounds that match the cadence of your breathing. The app even encourages you to clear your head by jotting down tomorrow's to-do list.
The resulting sleep score, which is based upon age and gender, also offers feedback and suggestions on how you can improve.
This is where ResMed's years in the field really pays off compared to general fitness trackers. For example, it'll tell you to try sleeping on your left side if stomach problems or heartburn is a factor, which is something you won't get from other trackers in this list.
Known for making sleep apnea devices, ResMed now has a tracker called the S+.
It has a sleek design and sits on your bedside table and does all the work of the other non-wearable trackers without the strip under the mattress.
This revolutionary technology is key for those who don't feel comfortable with a strip of sensors directly underneath their body.
The S+ by ResMed works using sonar to monitor your breathing patterns by tracking the movement of your chest.
It has a significantly lower price point for a full suite of features.
Some users have faced challenges in pairing and re-pairing the Bluetooth, but most people agree that this is a tracker that packs a powerful punch of features without a high price tag.
